GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code is usually a form factor choice, not a model beauty contest. Pick GitHub Copilot if you want inline autocomplete, chat and agents inside the IDE (and GitHub.com) you already use, with a free tier and a $10/month Pro entry price. Pick Claude Code if you want an agent that plans, edits across the repo, runs commands and verifies work, especially from the terminal, with deep MCP, skills and automation. Many teams use both: Copilot for everyday IDE flow, Claude Code for multifile refactors and CI.
This guide compares the products as of October 11, 2026: surfaces, pricing, models, agents, MCP and decision rules. It does not rank underlying model quality. For a broader best of list, see best AI coding assistant. For Claude Code against other terminal agents, see Claude Code vs Codex vs Gemini CLI. If you work in Visual Studio, see GitHub Copilot alternatives for Visual Studio.
What's new (October 22, 2026): Copilot's model menu is changing fast. On October 19 GitHub retired Gemini 3.7 Flash, GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4, GPT-5.4 mini, GPT-5 mini and Grok 4.5 across Copilot Chat, agent mode and code completions, suggesting Gemini 3.8 Flash, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna and Grok 4.7 instead (GitHub changelog). Gemini 4 Argon joined Copilot on October 13, and Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra are scheduled to leave on November 16, though Opus 4.8 stays for individual subscribers on annual plans (GitHub changelog). Enterprise admins may need to enable the replacement models in their Copilot model policies. Claude Code is not affected by these Copilot changes.

Spoken plainly: Copilot is the cheapest way to put AI inside many editors and GitHub. Claude Code is the deeper agent loop when the unit of work is a whole task.
What GitHub Copilot is
GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant. Official plans materials describe assistive suggestions as you type, chat, agent mode in supported IDEs, Copilot CLI, code review, custom instructions and agents, MCP, and a cloud agent that can research, plan and open pull requests, including (in preview) delegating to third party coding agents such as Claude and OpenAI Codex.
Surfaces: extensions for VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Neovim, Eclipse, Xcode and others; Copilot Chat; Copilot CLI; GitHub.com and GitHub Mobile. That breadth is the main product bet: one seat across the tools a team already uses, wired into issues and PRs. If you work in Visual Studio and want something other than Copilot there, see our GitHub Copilot alternatives for Visual Studio.
Completions vs credits: On paid plans, code completions and next edit suggestions are not billed as GitHub AI Credits and stay unlimited. Chat, agent mode, code review, cloud agent, Copilot CLI and related features consume credits. Free plan completions are capped (2,000 per month per GitHub's plans FAQ).
What Claude Code is
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. Per the overview, the same engine runs in the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a desktop app, the web at claude.ai/code and mobile. It reads the codebase, edits across files, runs shell commands with your approval, connects MCP servers, loads agent skills, supports hooks and can run subagents in parallel. Headless claude -p, GitHub Actions and scheduled Routines cover automation.
Install (official): curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash on macOS/Linux/WSL, brew install --cask claude-code, or WinGet Anthropic.ClaudeCode. npm install is deprecated.
Instructions that stick: Prefer a project CLAUDE.md; Claude Code can also read AGENTS.md when no CLAUDE.md is present. That pairs well with skills and hooks for team shared workflows.
Pricing: GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code
Prices change; verify on vendor pages before you buy. Figures below match official docs checked October 11, 2026.
GitHub Copilot (individuals)
From GitHub Copilot plans and usage based billing:
| Plan | Price | Monthly AI credits (total) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited allowance; auto model selection; 2,000 completions/mo |
| Student | $0 (verified) | Allowance; excludes third party agents |
| Pro | $10/mo | 1,500 (1,000 base + 500 flex) |
| Pro+ | $39/mo | 7,000 |
| Max | $100/mo | 20,000 |
| Business | $19/user/mo | 1,900 pooled per user |
| Enterprise | $39/user/mo | 3,900 pooled per user |
One AI credit equals $0.01 USD. After the included allowance you can set a budget for extra usage. Teachers and popular open source maintainers may qualify for free Pro. Check GitHub's eligibility pages.
Is GitHub Copilot free in VS Code? There is a real Free plan with limited chat, agents and completions. Heavy daily agent use usually needs Pro or above.
Claude Code
From Claude pricing: Claude Code is included in paid Claude plans. It is not on Free.
| Plan | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20/mo ($17/mo billed annually) | Claude Code included; usage shared with chat |
| Max | From $100/mo | 5× or 20× Pro usage; higher output limits |
| Team / Enterprise | Seat + usage models | Claude Code included; admin controls |
Usage limits reset on a rolling five hour session window, with weekly caps on paid plans. Chat, desktop, mobile and Claude Code draw from the same pool. For heavy coding days you can add pay as you go API credits via an Anthropic Console account.
Cost takeaway
- Lowest cash entry: Copilot Free, then Copilot Pro at $10/mo.
- Already on Claude Pro/Max: Claude Code is "included", but it spends the same usage budget as Claude chat.
- Heavy agent sessions: Copilot meters tokens into AI credits; Claude meters session/weekly usage. Which feels cheaper depends on model choice and how long sessions run: watch each product's usage UI rather than assuming a fixed winner.
Models and context
Copilot exposes a large model menu across chat, agent mode, CLI and related features (OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, xAI Grok and others). Free and Student use auto model selection only. More powerful models cost more credits per interaction under usage based billing.
Claude Code runs Claude models. The terminal, VS Code and JetBrains surfaces can also target supported third party providers that still serve Claude. Context windows of up to about 1M tokens (varies by model) are advertised on Claude's pricing page: useful for large repo tasks, but still subject to plan usage limits.
If your org standardizes on one vendor for compliance, that often decides the tool before feature lists do.
Agents, CLI and GitHub workflow
Copilot agent surfaces: Agent mode in supported IDEs; Copilot CLI for local or GitHub-side changes; cloud agent that can take assigned work and open a PR; code review on github.com and in editors. Because Copilot is native to GitHub, issue → agent → PR → review stays on one platform. For Anthropic's pull request reviewer, see Claude Code Review.
How to use GitHub Copilot CLI: Install and authenticate per GitHub's Copilot docs; CLI usage draws AI credits like other agent/chat features. Prefer it when you want shell centric edits without leaving the Copilot credit meter.
Claude Code agent surfaces: Plan and execute loops by default in the CLI; IDE extensions with diffs; desktop and web sessions; claude -p for scripts; GitHub Actions / GitLab CI; Routines for scheduled cloud work. It is strong when the task does not need to start as a GitHub issue: migrations, multipackage refactors, log analysis pipelines.
GitHub Copilot vs Microsoft Copilot: Different products. GitHub Copilot is for software development (IDEs, repos, PRs). Microsoft 365 Copilot and related Microsoft Copilot assistants target Office and general work. Searching "Copilot" alone often mixes them. Use the GitHub product name when you mean coding.
MCP, skills and customization
Both tools speak MCP so agents can call tickets, docs, browsers and custom tools.
- Claude Code:
claude mcp addfor HTTP, stdio and related transports; project.mcp.jsonfor team sharing; skills, hooks and CLAUDE.md/AGENTS.md for durable instructions (MCP docs). - Copilot: MCP on every plan including Free, per GitHub's plans comparison (Business and Enterprise admins must turn the MCP policy on; setup by surface is in how to use MCP server in GitHub Copilot), plus repository/personal custom instructions, prompt files and agent skills in supported IDEs.
If you are building servers, start with how to build an MCP server in Python. Keep approvals on for write tools; prefer wrapping a normal API rather than inventing a second system of record.
Who should pick which
- Stay in JetBrains / Visual Studio / multi IDE shops, or need GitHub Enterprise policies? → GitHub Copilot.
- Want unlimited inline autocomplete as the daily driver? → Copilot (Claude Code is agent first).
- Need long multifile tasks, terminal automation or CI agents? → Claude Code (or Codex if you are on ChatGPT).
- Budget is the binding constraint? → Try Copilot Free, then Pro; Claude Code starts at Pro $20/mo.
- Already pay for Claude Pro/Max? → Claude Code is the natural agent; keep Copilot only if you still want IDE completions across non-Claude workflows.
- Want an AI native editor instead? → Consider Cursor; that is a third path covered in best AI coding assistant.
GitHub Copilot alternatives for VS Code in this niche: Claude Code's VS Code extension, Cursor (VS Code fork), Cline, Codex IDE extension, Gemini CLI integrations. Pick by agent depth vs autocomplete vs open source preference.
FAQ
Is Claude Code better than GitHub Copilot?
For autonomous multifile and terminal work, Claude Code is usually the stronger agent. For inline autocomplete across many IDEs and GitHub native issue to PR workflows, Copilot wins. They are complementary more often than mutually exclusive.
Is GitHub Copilot free in VS Code?
Yes, via Copilot Free: limited completions (2,000/month), limited chat and agent usage, and auto model selection only. Paid Pro starts at $10/month with 1,500 AI credits and unlimited completions.
Does Claude Code include autocomplete like Copilot?
No. Claude Code is built around plan execute verify agent sessions. You can use it from a VS Code extension with diffs, but it is not a drop in Tab completion replacement. Pair it with Copilot or another completer if you want both.
Can I use both GitHub Copilot and Claude Code?
Yes. A common setup is Copilot for everyday completions and GitHub PR agents, plus Claude Code for hard refactors, migrations and scripted CI. Watch usage meters on both so you do not double burn credits and Claude session limits on the same task.
How do MCP servers work in each tool?
In Claude Code, add servers with claude mcp add (or project .mcp.json). In Copilot, MCP works on every plan, including Free; configure servers in the supported IDE or in Copilot CLI. Both can call the same class of MCP servers; auth, scopes and approvals still matter. See MCP server vs API.
